Welcome

Dear Colleagues,

It is my honour and pleasure to announce the second EDS Surgical Skills Course (SSC) - a continuation of the initiative of European Digestive Surgery, taking place in Kaunas, Lithuania on November 3-4th, 2017. The event is being organized by EDS, Department of Surgery, Medical academy and the Animal Research Centre, Veterinary Academy, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences under auspices of United European Gastroenterology.

I am also proud to remind you that in 2007 Kaunas was hosting the first EDS Postgraduate Course, the very successful EDS project running in Eastern European Countries yearly since then. We hope the EDS Surgical Skills courses will share similar long-lasting success.

The goal of the EDS Surgical Skills Course (SSC) is to provide surgical residents and young practicing surgeons an opportunity to learn/improve the fundamental skills of conventional and laparoscopic surgery in a consistent, scientifically accepted format, together with workshops on eFAST (Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma) and Evidence Based Medicine.

The program of the course was meticulously revised, taking into account the feedback from the participants of the 1st EDS SSC – the trainees as well as the trainers. This resulted in expanding and elaborating exercises to gain and improve your surgical skills in open and laparoscopic approach, to obtain some experience with ultrasound guided interventions. All with the goal of improving the quality of patient care. The course will be held over two days with a series of introductory lectures, demonstrations and extensive hands on sessions.

The faculty is drawn from a specially selected group of local and international surgeons and emergency medicine doctors, each with a wide range of knowledge and experience in teaching.

Kaunas city with its historical and cultural heritage is recognized as an exciting tourist destination.

Furthermore, EDS travel grants will be awarded to the international participants of the EDS Surgical Skills Course.

I am pleased to invite you all to take part in the course and enjoy our hospitality.

Prof. Giedrius Barauskas
